49 self-help groups formed in Pudukottai

PUDUKOTTAI: The Continuing Education Programme (Valarkalvi Iyakkam) unit in the district has floated 49 self-help groups (SHGs).
The SHGs comprise unemployed male youths in the district with a view to imparting employment skills on various economic activities.
The Tamil Nadu Corporation for Women’s Development has recognised the CEP as one of the agencies for floating the ‘youth SHGs’.
The corporation co-ordinates with them for organising periodic meetings and supervision of their achievement in savings. Overwhelming response
There has been an overwhelming response from unemployed youths to ‘youth SHGs’. The Mahalir Thittam has stepped up the target. Since the last year’s target of 25 SHGs evoked an overwhelming response, it was decided to form 40 SHGs during the current financial year.
“This year too, there has been a similar response and so far, 24 groups have been floated in various parts of the district.
On an average, each group comprises 12 members,” says CEP District Project Co-ordinator V. Ramalingam. Periodic meetings
Block-level resource-persons attached to the CEP co-ordinate the process of formation of the SHGs and impart skills to them wherever needed.
“Periodic meetings are held in each block for motivating unemployed youths to make the most of the SHG concept,” Mr. Ramalingam told ‘The Hindu’ on Monday. Skill development towards economic activities was being taken up.SHGs to be rated
The SHGs, which were floated last year, would be rated for credit linkage and other concessions.
Qualified in Plus Two public examinations and unable to pursue their higher education, most members were more inclined to take to welding and servicing of electrical gadgets, Mr. Ramalingam said. The youths of Annavasal block evinced a keen interest in forming the SHGs. A maximum of eight SHGs had been floated in this block.
